Le Poisson d’Avril—April Fools’ Day

Though the origin of April Fools’ Day is still a mystery—no kidding!—it is thought that this holiday began in France. In 1582, France decided to switch from the Julian calendar (which began its new year every April 1st) to the Gregorian calendar which celebrated the new year on January 1st. Those who did not get the memo became the brunt of many a joke, including having paper fish placed on their backs. The “poisson d’Avril” became a symbol of a very gullible person.

The Basket Corner loves a good laugh, especially one coming from a happy customer. So on this April Fools’ Day, we invite you to send someone a basketful of fun—like the Ocean Market basket. It is loaded with gourmet goodies reminiscent of sandy beaches, sunny smiles and fish!
